Interpreting Scripture with Scripture is a good way to discover truths in God's Word. In this episode Richard Fangrad and Calvin Smith explore how other biblical authors understood Genesis. They understood that it was a record of actual events and people.

Seattle Creation Conference, October 2010.

Description:
Dinosaurs have inspired countless myths and legends, but where do the facts meet with the Bible? Paleontologists assert that dinosaurs went extinct 65 million years ago, long before humans ever walked the Earth. But, this view is in stark contrast to the creation account in Genesis, which states the both humans and land animals were created on the same day.

This presentation will provide a summary of the naturalist perspective of dinosaurs, and then looks to the Bible for insight into their true history. Are dinosaurs mentioned in the Bible? Were they also placed on Noah's ark? If so, why are they now extinct? These and other key issues will be answered in this popular talk.

About the Speaker:
Chris Ashcraft is a Christian educator, creation scientist, and speaker employed as high school science teacher at Cedar Park Christian Schools where he provides instruction in Biology, Chemistry, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and Life Science.

Formerly, Chris was a research technician, specialized in plant tissue culture, and genetic transformation technology. He served as a research technician at the Cotton Fiber Production Laboratory at Texas Tech University, he then provided technical support at the Plant Transformation Facility at Oklahoma State University, and lastly was employed as the Plant Transformation Specialist for EDEN Bioscience in Bothell Washington .

He obtained a Bachelor of Science in biology from Wayland Baptist University in 1989, a Master of Science in biology from Texas Tech University in 1996, a Master of Education from the University of Washington in 2008, and a Master is Teaching Math and Science from Seattle Pacific University in 2012.

Chris moved from research science into the teaching profession to serve God in Christian education. His decision was motivated by the impact that secular science is having on people of faith. Today, close to 50% of Christian students lose their belief in God while attending secular schools. This tendency could be lessened if the Church was better equipped to defend the authority of Biblical teachings (1 Peter 3:15). To be prepared for these challenges, it is important that Churches provide regular educational programs on creation and other Bible apologetics.

Rather than accept what the Bible says about who wrote Genesis (Moses), nearly all liberal Bible colleges and seminaries (and sadly some which profess conservative evangelical doctrine) teach the 'documentary hypothesis' (also known as the 'JEDP hypothesis') instead. So what is this hypothesis and does it actually answer the question of "Who wrote Genesis?"?

According to history recorded in the Bible everyone who has ever lived comes from Adam and Eve. At Babel, after Noah's flood, God created several language groups from a single language group, resulting in the dispersion of these groups all over the world. This raises questions such as: how did different skin colours originate? What about all the fossil evidence for 'races' coming from 'ape-men'?

I have had a bee in my bonnet recently about progressive Christians and "sophisticated theology" that tries to pass the first book of the Bible off as poetry or something not to be taken literally. I don't know if many Christians who read Genesis this way understand the fundamental way in which this undermines key doctrines of the Christian faith. Don't get me wrong there are many good reasons not to think that Genesis is literally true, but trying to reconcile Christianity and modern science usually results in the Bible loosing much of it's credibility.

Meanings Of The Names In Genesis 5

How to Study the Bible

Q & A: Where did you find the meanings of the names in Genesis 5?

The background behind the genealogy in Genesis 5 is one of our most frequently asked questions.

Since the ten Hebrew names are proper names, they are not translated but only transliterated to approximate the way they were pronounced. The meaning of proper names can be a difficult pursuit since direct translations are not readily available. Many study aids, such as conventional lexicons, can prove superficial when dealing with proper names. Even a conventional Hebrew lexicon can prove disappointing. A study of the original roots, however, can yield some fascinating insights. (It should be recognized, however, that the views concerning the meaning and significance of the original roots are not free of controversy and are subject to variant readings. This is why we receive so many questions or comments on variations.)

Adam

The first name, Adam, comes from adomah, and means "man." As the first man, that seems straightforward enough.

Seth

Adam's son was named Seth, which means "appointed." When he was born Eve said, "For God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew."

Enosh

Seth's son was called Enosh, which means "mortal," "frail," or "miserable." It is from the root anash: to be incurable; used of a wound, grief, woe, sickness, or wickedness. (It was in the days of Enosh that men began to defile the name of the Living God.1 )

Kenan

Enosh's son was named Kenan, from which can mean "sorrow," dirge," or "elegy." (The precise denotation is somewhat elusive; some study aids unfortunately presume an Aramaic root synonymous with "Cainan.") Balaam, looking down from the heights of Moab, employed a pun upon the name of the Kenites when he prophesied their destruction.2

Mahalalel

Kenan's son was Mahalalel, from mahalal, which means "blessed" or "praise"; and El, the name for God. Thus, Mahalalel means "the Blessed God." Often Hebrew names included El, the name of God, as Dani-el, "God is my Judge," Nathani-el, "Gift of God," etc.

Jared

Mahalalel's son was named Jared, from the verb yaradh, meaning "shall come down." Some authorities suggest that this might have been an allusion to the "Sons of God" who "came down" to corrupt the daughters of men, resulting in the Nephilim ("Fallen Ones") of Genesis 6.3

Enoch

Jared's son was named Enoch, which means "teaching," or "commencement." He was the first of four generations of preachers. In fact, the earliest recorded prophecy was by Enoch, which amazingly enough deals with the Second Coming of Christ.4

Methuselah

The Flood of Noah did not come as a surprise. It had been preached on for four generations. But something strange happened when Enoch was 65, from which time "he walked with God." Enoch was given a prophecy that as long as his son was alive, the judgment of the flood would be withheld; but as soon as he died, the flood would be sent forth.

Enoch named his son to reflect this prophecy. The name Methuselah comes from two roots: muth, a root that means "death"5 ; and from shalach, which means "to bring," or "to send forth." Thus, the name Methuselah signifies, "his death shall bring."6

And, indeed, in the year that Methuselah died, the flood came. Methuselah was 187 when he had Lamech, and lived 782 years more. Lamech had Noah when he was 182.7 The Flood came in Noah's 600th year.8 187 + 182 + 600 = 969, Methuselah's age when he died.9

It is interesting that Methuselah's life was, in effect, a symbol of God's mercy in forestalling the coming judgment of the flood. It is therefore fitting that his lifetime is the oldest in the Bible, symbolizing the extreme extensiveness of God's mercy.

Lamech

Methuselah's son was named Lamech, a root still evident today in our own English word, "lament" or "lamentation." Lamech suggests "despairing." (This name is also linked to the Lamech in Cain's line who inadvertently killed his son Tubal-Cain in a hunting incident. 10 )

Noah

Lamech, of course, is the father of Noah, which is derived from nacham , "to bring relief" or "comfort," as Lamech himself explains. 11

📺 David Bokovoy, author of Authoring the Old Testament: Genesis-Deuteronomy
Greg Kofford Books 📤 4 years ago 2014-02-12
Book Description:

For the last two centuries, biblical scholars have made discoveries and insights about the Old Testament that have greatly changed the way in which the authorship of these ancient scriptures has been understood. In the first of three volumes spanning the entire Hebrew Bible, David Bokovoy dives into the Pentateuch, showing how and why textual criticism has led biblical scholars today to understand the first five books of the Bible as an amalgamation of multiple texts into a single, though often complicated narrative; and he discusses what implications those have for Latter-day Saint understandings of the Bible and modern scripture.

Praise for Authoring the Old Testament:

"Authoring the Old Testament is a welcome introduction, from a faithful Latter-day Saint perspective, to the academic world of Higher Criticism of the Hebrew Bible. . . . [R]eaders will be positively served and firmly impressed by the many strengths of this book, coupled with Bokovoy's genuine dedication to learning by study and also by faith." — John W. Welch, editor, BYU Studies Quarterly

"Bokovoy provides a lucid, insightful lens through which disciple-students can study intelligently LDS scripture. This is first rate scholarship made accessible to a broad audience—nourishing to the heart and mind alike." — Fiona Givens, co-author, The God Who Weeps: How Mormonism Makes Sense of Life

"Authoring the Old Testament opens up a much-needed dialog on the historical-critical approach for Latter-day Saints. It demonstrates, in insightful and meaningful ways, how the historical-critical method can be faithfully applied to the Book of Mormon, the Book of Moses, and the Book of Abraham. In my view, this book is a must for those seeking to incorporate the best of biblical scholarship in their personal or professional scripture study." — Brian Hauglid, author, A Textual History of the Book of Abraham: Manuscripts and Editions

"Bringing fresh insights to the Old Testament, a book like this for a Latter-day Saint audience is long overdue. Bokovoy skillfully weaves together biblical scholars with LDS leaders and texts to demonstrate the religious benefits of confronting post-Enlightenment readings of the Bible, clarifying long-standing questions. Charting a middle path between conservative inerrancy and secular dismissal of biblical texts, this book refreshingly expounds on the nature of ancient and modern scripture." — Taylor G. Petrey, Lucinda Hinsdale Stone Assistant Professor of Religion, Kalamazoo College

"As clear an introduction to historical and source criticism as Friedman's Who Wrote the Bible and Baden's The Composition of the Pentateuch, Bokovoy's Authoring the Old Testament: Genesis—Deuteronomy provides an important resource in making many of the intricacies of higher criticism available to Latter-day Saint readers in an accessible fashion. Because Bokovoy has geared it to an LDS audience, he has also been able to make interesting suggestions for critically reading Restoration texts. Regardless of one's final position on the Documentary Hypothesis, this book should be basic reading for serious LDS students of the Bible." — Eric D. Huntsman, Coordinator of Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Brigham Young University

This is a project that has been on my mind for over four and a half years-- outlining all the Books of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. This series is not ment to be an exhaustive, indepth study of the Bible, but an overview of why each of the sixty-six Books were written, and to see the unfolding plan of God, from the creation of the universe, to the consummation of all things in the Book of Revelation. Now, some of the information put forth in the videos will come from my own personal studies, but *most of it* will come from the study notes and commentaries of the teachers who have influenced me over the last sixteen years, such as: Dr.J. Vernon McGee (Thru The Bible Radio), William MacDonald (***Believers Bible Commentary-- My primary source for this project***), Dr. John Walvoord (Editor of The Bible Knowledge Commentary Series), Dr. David Brickner (Jews For Jesus), Dr. Randall Price, Dr. Charles Halff, Dr. Dave Hunt (The Berean Call), Dr. Adrian Rogers, Dr. Ken Ham (Answers In Genesis), Dr. John Morris (Institute for Creation Research), Roger Oakland (Understand The Times), Zola Levitt and a few more. It is my prayer that this series will be a blessing to all who listen, and that unbelievers will come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour. God bless.

We are constantly fed the idea through newspapers, magazines, museums and text books the belief that fossils and rocks petrify over millions of years. Richard and Calvin discuss how this concept has been debunked by evolutionary scientists which means that the rocks and fossils we find on the earth could easily have formed in the 4,500 years since Noah's Flood.

Did the people written of in the book of Genesis really live to be 900 years old? Tim Staples explains what the Catholic Church teaches about this.

Tim Staples is Director of Apologetics and Evangelization here at Catholic Answers, but he was not always Catholic. Tim was raised a Southern Baptist. Although he fell away from the faith of his childhood, Tim came back to faith in Christ during his late teen years through the witness of Christian televangelists. Soon after, Tim joined the Marine Corps. During his four-year tour, he became involved in ministry with various Assemblies of God communities. Immediately after his tour of duty, Tim enrolled in Jimmy Swaggart Bible College and became a youth minister in an Assembly of God community.

During his final year in the Marines, however, Tim met a Marine who really knew his faith and challenged Tim to study Catholicism from Catholic and historical sources. That encounter sparked a two-year search for the truth. Tim was determined to prove Catholicism wrong, but he ended up studying his way to the last place he thought he would ever end up: the Catholic Church!

He converted to Catholicism in 1988 and spent the following six years in formation for the priesthood, earning a degree in philosophy from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Overbrook, Pennsylvania. He then studied theology on a graduate level at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland, for two years.

Realizing that his calling was not to the priesthood, Tim left the seminary in 1994 and has been working in Catholic apologetics and evangelization ever since.

Catholic Apologist Extraordinaire!

Tim Staples has given hundreds of talks all over the country and has helped thousands of people find their way home to the Catholic Church. He brings his extensive knowledge of Scripture into his tapes, books, and talks, helping others to see the strong biblical evidences that support Catholic doctrines. Tim's humorous enthusiasm captivates his audiences, and his unique style has brought him great renown as an engaging speaker.

In the first of a series of lectures on the book of Genesis, the basic elements of biblical monotheism are compared with Ancient Near Eastern texts to show a non-mythological, non-theogonic conception of the deity, a new conception of the purpose and meaning of human life, nature, magic and myth, sin and evil, ethics (including the universal moral law) and history. The two creation stories are explored and the work of Nahum Sarna is introduced.

📺 Should Genesis be taken literally?
Creation Ministries International 📤 6 years ago 2012-03-19
Young earth Creationists are sometimes accused of believing that the whole Bible should be taken 'literally'. What we actually encourage is that the Biblical text should be taken according to the style of writing, that is—taken straightforwardly.

The Bible contains: Poetry, Parables, Prophecy, Apocalyptical writing and Historical narrative. Each writing style should taken as it is written. For example, we should not twist the parables of Jesus to suggest that they refer to real people or events.

Since Genesis was clearly written as historical narrative to understand it straightforwardly means taking it as a literal, historical record of what actually happened.

How could a perfect God create such an imperfect world? The answer is in the very first verse of the Bible- but this verse is translated incorrectly in English Bibles. We have an imperfect world created by imperfect Creators- according to Genesis. The cure? Humans. Even though I only translate what Genesis 1:1 says, I've never heard anyone explain it before. Since my assertions are startling, I put detail in the video for those who want proof. Coming soon: Why the work of the Creators was flawed, and how a fix was formed.
'Tiqqun (tikkun) olam' means 'world repair', the purpose of humans.

Hi, I'm Tim Coombs, co-pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Scotia, NY and a member of the network of biblical storytellers. To learn more about its mission, go to nbsint.org.

Genesis begins with stories of creation. One, the seven days of creation, and then also the stories of Adam and Eve and then it begins this early history of the people, of God. Sort of a primeval history. It continues through Cain and Abel, Noah and the Ark, and finally to the Tower of Babel. And then after the Tower of Babel begin what is called the stories of the patriarchs and the matriarchs.

The first patriarch being Abraham who leaves the area where the Tower of Babel occurred, and goes to a land that God is going to promise him. God makes a covenant with Abraham. And there's Abraham and Sarah, and then comes his son Isaac, and Rebekah, and the stories of their sons Jacob and Esau.

And then we continue the story through Jacob to the story of Joseph who goes down to Egypt, well actually is sold into slavery by his brothers and then the people come to Egypt to respond to the famine that is going on because Joseph has provided grain for everybody. Now these stories of the patriarchs and matriarchs are not stories of perfect people. They have their flaws, as we've seen. And that's part of the story of Genesis. Creation begins good, but as the stories continue revealing what people who have their problems, their flaws, these are real people and we can identify with them. And that's why these stories have endured over the centuries, over the millennium. That is what Genesis is about.

Was dinosaur extinction a result of a massive impact by an asteroid? Support for this comes from what has been interpreted as a massive impact crater (called Chicxulub) in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula plus an iridium rich layer in the geologic record between the Cretaceous and Tertiary rock layers. It may be better to understand these and other geologic features to be the result of "big belches" of basalt—flood basalts. That interpretation fits nicely with the Bible's account of Noah's Flood and the associated massive catastrophism.
