In 2008, the BBC produced a controversial documentary on the harmful effects of pedigree dog shows. According to the documentary, many dog owners are causing dangerous levels of in-breeding; this results in dogs with crippling genetic deformities. One RSPCA vet said, "What I see in front of me is a parade of mutants. It's some freakish, garish beauty pageant."

Most of our domestic varieties have harmful problems due to mutations and the breeding required to maintain breed purity tends to amplify these problems further. The changes we see in dogs today give no support to evolutionary expectations.

After dogs originated from an ancestral wolf-type creature there genomes have undergone mutational decay. Their genomes have suffered a loss but not the creation of new information evolution needs to be believable, as a mechanism from changing microbes into mangos, mutts and mankind.

The health of pedigree dogs is at risk due to show ring fixations on exaggerations and a propensity to inbreed. Some breed standards need to change, and a ceiling needs to be put on Coefficients of Inbreeding. Because the AKC will not change, it has seen a 55% decline in registrations in the last 15 years.

📺 Pain in Pedigree Pups
CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2012-10-30
The breeding of pedigree dogs is causing them to suffer great pain. According to Steve Jones, Professor of genetics at University College London, some dog breeds are "paying a terrible price in genetic disease".
One award-winning Cavalier King Charles spaniel was even suffering from a condition where its skull was too small for its brain.
Following Darwin, evolutionists often claim that selection—artificial or natural—is a creative force that can change microbes into microbiologists. However, in selecting one animal or plant over another, the genes of the non-selected one are lost. So selection gets rid of genetic information; it does not create it. For evolution to be believable, natural selection would need to create new genes with the specifications for all the features that humans have and microbes don't.
Natural selection happens in today's world, but it is not capable of changing microbes into mankind.

CMIcreationstation 📤 5 years ago 2013-03-06
Dogs vary greatly in size, from Chihuahua to Great Dane, yet they are all part of the dog, or wolf, created kind; they can all interbreed. Researchers have found that the small breeds of dogs all have something in common, a mutation in the gene that codes for an important growth regulator. This prevents the small dogs from growing to greater size.

Mutations do that sort of thing, they destroy genetic information. Sometimes those destructions are useful to us, producing cute miniature dogs that don't cost that much to feed. But mutations can't produce the complex information needed to produce the growth regulator in the first place.

Evolutionists say mutations changed dinosaurs into birds and apes into people. But how can mutations, which destroy information, do that sort of thing? Modern biology really shouts creation not evolution.

Bill Nye the Science Guy returns to Big Think to discuss evolution, this time from a canine point of view. Nye explains how dogs evolved out of an early human-wolf interaction which today benefits both species. He also draws a comparison between dog breeds and the social construct of race, claiming that both are man-made myths not steeped in science. Bill's latest book is "Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation."

Transcript: I love dogs as much as the next guy. I talk to dogs. In preparing this book I spoke with dogs at length. Maybe I spoke more to dogs than with them. But they’re all dogs, that’s the thing. I know we all love our kennel club show we all go there. We obsess about whether our dog is a pug, Jack Russell terrier mix with corgi overtones and an oaky finish. An approachable little dog, whatever. They’re all dogs, okay. And so the idea of a purebred is just a human construct. There’s no such thing – in a sense there’s no such thing as a purebred dog. And that’s – I don’t have a problem with that. That’s the way it is. By the way you talk to any veterinarian and they’ll tell you that a mutt is a much healthier dog generally because they have this mix of genes, they’re not inbred, they haven’t made the same gene repeat too many times. And so it’s funny, it’s charming to me but there’s a great lesson to be learned. Dogs are a descendent either from wolves or from one ancestor before wolves. But what you and I think of as a modern wolf may or may not be the direct – what led to a modern dog.

People talk about this as I’m writing the book. In the next five years it will probably be resolved. Somebody will come up with a definitive answer to that. But anyway, apparently these experiments were done with foxes which are just the coolest thing where the foxes that were friendlier, that they were more comfortable around people, they were allowed to approach, they were allowed to use human food. After just three generations they had floppy scritchable ears and they were much more like dogs. And it just shows you that dogs are almost certainly a result of a human wolf ancestor interaction. As we became friends with them they became friends with us and we have a dependency that’s charming. It’s enriched both the dog lives and the human lives. It’s really quite an insight and it’s a result of evolution. The other lesson to be learned from dogs for me is since they’re all dogs it’s just – if you have a dachshund and a Great Dane and they interact, can we say interact on Big Think? If they interact all you get is a dog. You don’t get any new thing, new species, you just get a dog. In the same way if a Papua New Guinean hooks up with a Swedish person all you get is a human. There’s no new thing you’re going to get. You just get a human. Japanese woman jumping the African guy, all you get is a human. They’re all humans. So this is a lesson to be learned. There really is, for humankind there’s really no such thing as race. There’s different tribes but not different races. We’re all one species.

📺 Belgian Blue Cows -- evidence of 'de-volution'
CMIcreationstation 📤 4 years ago 2013-10-28
If Arnold Schwarzenegger had a pet cow, I can almost guarantee it would be a Belgian Blue. These cows are incredibly muscled and have very little fat. Many people think of this breed as evolution in action—because a mutation in its DNA has brought about a supposed improvement.

But if microbes really did turn into Belgian Blue cows—which is what evolution teaches—this would require the addition of lots of new DNA information to turn the relatively simple genome of a bacteria into the vastly more complicated genome of a cow.

However, in the case of Belgian Blue cows, we see the opposite, because no new information has been added. In fact, a mutation has corrupted the myostatin gene, which normally stops muscles growing too big—so information has been lost. The cows have lost control over muscle growth. So Belgian Blue cows have devolved, not evolved!

The Wonder of Dogs Episode 1 BBC Documentary 2013 All about Dogs
From huge dogs to tiny dogs, working dogs to lap dogs, hairy dogs to hairless dogs - the team investigates why this single species comes in so many shapes and sizes. Set in a typical English village, the team uses DNA science to reveal the sometimes surprising family trees of some of the village dogs. The team also find out how the extraordinary genetics of modern dogs underlies the extreme differences we see between breeds.

Historian Ruth Goodman uncovers the surprising origins of the poodle's famous haircut; finds out what makes greyhounds the fastest dogs on the planet; and travels to the Guisachan Estate in the Scottish Highlands to meet hundreds of golden retrievers at the ancestral home of this popular breed.

Steve meets the hairiest dog breed of all and reveals how its dreadlocked coat once acted as lightweight armour. Kate investigates the remarkable story of dogs - from their ancient ancestor the grey wolf, through thousands of years as our working companions, to the Victorian creation of the dog breeds we know today.

Understanding Pitbulls: A Nasty Message about dogsUnderstanding Pitbulls: A Nasty Message about dogs
📺 Understanding Pitbulls: A Nasty Message about dogs
Michael Harrison 📤 5 years ago 2012-11-08
Pitbulls: A Nasty Message is a short documentary that focuses on the negative perception of Pitbulls and the Pitbull breed.

Here is an excerpt on the breed:

Doberman pinschers, rottweilers, and German shepherds topped lists of dogs some considered dangerous in the not-too-distant past.

These days, pit bulls often make headlines and it's rarely good news. If it isn't about an attack on a child or a shooting by police, it's a tale of neglect or abuse. The heat of such reports has forged a frightening image of the pit bull as having a hair-trigger temper and a lock-jawed bite.

Indeed, the ASPCA web site gives the breed an endorsement that could fit a golden retriever. It says, "A well-socialized and well-trained pit bull is one of the most delightful, intelligent, and gentle dogs imaginable."

In general, pit bulls aren't aggressive with people but are "less tolerant" of other dogs than many other breeds, says Pamela Reid, PhD, vice president of the ASPCA's Animal Behavior Center in New York. They also have "great tenacity. They put their mind to something, and they do it. That's what makes them great dogs for sports like weight pulling. They are very strong, athletic animals," Reid says.

Owning a pit bull should not be taken lightly. Some cities and towns have banned the breed. You also may face rising insurance rates or cancellation of your policy, difficulty renting, and the watchful eye of neighbors and passersby.

Origins and Nature

The American Pit Bull Terrier is technically the only true pit bull, although the American Staffordshire Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier are often referred to as pit bulls. So are a handful of other breeds and mixed breeds.

Pit bulls were originally used for bull- and bear-baiting, and later were bred to fight dogs in an arena. They had "a fabulous reputation early on and were considered the ideal family pet because they were so good with people," Reid says.

"Petey" from The Little Rascals was a pit bull. Helen Keller, President Theodore Roosevelt, and Fred Astaire all had the breed as family pets.

But the tide turned in the late 1990s, when pit bulls became popular among people who "weren't focused on the positive attributes of the breed - they were looking for a strong, scary-looking dog," Reid says.

Where do they come from, and how did they evolve from their wild wolf ancestors? Jacques and Irene visit Adam Boyko, whose team at Cornell University has collected genetic samples from village dogs in 38 countries. Surprisingly, village dogs did not originate from purebred dogs. WATCH THE NEW VIDEO: "How we improved dogs". It's my new, better attempt at the same thing.

This video took me about three days to make, and I feel I had to do it.
Now, I'm not bashing any breed or dog here, I'm "bashing" the people who own and breed them to be this way.

About the Shar-Pei eye tacking - yes I know it is TACKING, but a one-letter-mistake in a 9-minute video when English is not my native language, I think is quite acceptable.

Oh and about the Afghan hound - I don't know how many times I've got the complaint "That's not an Afghan, that's a SALUKI!", but no, it is an Afghan, and here is the proof:
http://smg.photobucket.com/user/Pietoro/media/Dog%20Breed%20Historical%20Pictures/Afghan%20Hound/1900Afghan.jpg.html?sort=9&o=2
http://afghanhoundtimes.com/shahz2p.htm

The breeds I found pictures of but that didn't make it were the Boxer, Borzoi, Bearded Collie, Dogue de Bordeaux, Dachshund and Irish Setter. Then of course MANY more breeds have changed for the worse, but perhaps I couldn't find a good "before" picture.

And I didn't have more time in the video, anyway, which is why I had to cut a few breeds out, and it still became rushed.
About the "disease-texts" - I know they are just flying by but they are more to prove a point than meant to be read completely. If you want to really read them, then pause the video.

The sources? Books, Kennel Club homepages, breed-specific sites (written by people who really know the breeds)...

Like I said, I have nothing *against* ANY dog breed.
Just *some* of the people who own and breed them.

Basset Hound - Awful, and just more of the bad excuses of the show breeders. "They have that skin so they can turn more easily in the bushes" - right... "They have skin folds over their eyes and ears long enough to step on so they should only focus on their sense of smell" - right...

Chow Chow - There's no justification for breeding a dog like that. Where are the eyes? Why the exaggerated coat (which puts some dogs into heat stroke)? Why the straight hind legs?

Shar-Pei - One sad story. Take a look at the Thai Ridgeback Dog - then look at the traditional Shar-Pei. Look at the TRD's puppies - they look like Shar-Pei almost, don't they?
Those are the wrinkles people exaggerated because they wanted their dogs wrinkly as adults too.
AT LEAST 40-50% of SP puppies has to have their eyes "tacked", meaning, sewn and attached to the skin of the forehead or neck, to avoid them getting really bad entropion at a very young age.
How can anyone justify this?

Pekingese - Now... what does the standard say... Oh, yes. "Nose: Not too short", "Muzzle: Must be evident, but may be relatively short", "Hair: Moderately long", "Length and volume of coat should neither impair the activity of the dog nor obscure the shapeliness of body. Excessive coat must be heavily penalised."
Can the Pekingese judges and breeders read?

Mastino Napoletano: What a beautiful dog this was. I say this as an owner of one of the original mastiff breeds, and I would love to have a Mastino, had they existed like they were sixty years ago.
Basically all molossers can trace their heritage back to the roman arenas, but no molosser has owners more keen to illustrate this heritage than the Mastino.
And no other molosser has evolved away from that heritage more than the Mastino. They are but a shadow of their past.

English Bulldog - Probably the dog farthest away from the original shape, of all the breeds on this Earth. Don't get me wrong, some look fairly good, not all are horribly sick, but seriously... as long as dogs with grotesque, oversized heads, narrow hips, horrible hip dysplasia, heart diseases, noses at most one centimeter long, and airways so tight and deformed they constantly snore and struggle to breathe are awarded at dog shows - I see no hope for this breed.
How anyone can breed animals who can barely move freely, breathe freely and mate and give birth without insemination and C-section with their conscience intact is beyond me.

This is animal cruelty.
Animal cruelty which is completely legal, and even supported by lots and lots of people.
I'm going to get even more harsh and say - dog fighting. That's a horrible practice that puts millions of dogs into horrible pain every year.
This is not much better.

Now, like I said in the video, not all of these dogs are sick, and not all of the "good" examples are healthy, definitely not. But - and this is also why I finished the video with a picture of a wolf - the wolf's shape is how nature decided this species is to be constructed.

You can move away from that shape somewhat without it causing any harm, but the farther away from the original shape you go, the higher the cost will be - for the dogs.

There are no excuses for this.

This is what happens when well known breeders, decide to breed 2 dogs with major defects in their pedigree to make a little extra money on the aside and discount the price by using their reputation to lure their prey. Jack was a true long coat with no undercoat, had deformed testicles, floating rib, spinal mal formation, hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. We were told he was a completely normal and healthy german shepherd short hair. He was a joy for the entire 8 months we had him, and the breeder was your worst nightmare come true. This poor guy was doomed from the start, but we gave him the best and even took time off of work to spend every one of his 8 months with him. A true beauty who wanted to live and grow old.

I have an update. A year ago I started to work with San Diego Coastal German Shepherd Rescue and I ran into a dog that look just like this little dog Jack. He acts like Jack in every way, I had to rescue. His name is Karsyn, look for his video. He has been a blessing in everyway each day

Broadcast (2006) Magic of Motion : Most animals, and even a few plants, move. They swim, walk, run or fly in a wide range of ways, and in this programme we look at how designers of planes, cars and robots have found inspiration in nature. But biomimetics is not just about copying nature, it's about understanding the principles behind nature's success and applying those in new and surprising ways. So exploring the world of cars and planes also gives us some startling new insights into nature as well. In this programme we find out why sharks can swim so fast, how flies and geckos can climb smooth glass and how vultures can help the next generation of airliners. We also meet robot cockroaches that might look like something from science fiction, but might be the fore-runners of the latest all terrain vehicles.

NatureTech, a multi-award-winning series, explores "biomimetics" - the science of looking to nature for answers to modern problems. Why are blossoms never dirty and can we also make our cars that way? Why can geckos walk on the ceiling and can we use their tricks to create better adhesives? Why is the spider's web tougher than steel? Exciting new developments in computer technology, chemistry and physics are now enabling us to understand Nature's designs better than ever before. Scientists are not simply trying to copy nature -- they are taking hints, extracting principles and applying winning designs of evolution in a new, human context.

Visually, this series is an attractive, fast-paced mix of stunning natural history shots, computer-assisted design and CGI graphics of futuristic inventions, ultra-modern, spacy architecture and high tech as well as scenes of the world's leading designers and engineers at work, all created by the team that made "Limits of Perception".

Evolution Unleashed: The Making of the Dog

Recorded at the Bryant Lake Bowl on 10-20-15.

"Before they domesticated cats, cows, chickens, corn, wheat, rice or anything else, humans domesticated dogs. Or perhaps it’s more accurate to say that dogs domesticated themselves by deciding to hang around humans to gain food and protection. Even in ancient times, some dogs were selected to be herders, hunters, and fighters, and the descendants of some of the breeds are still with us today. But, the majority of the world’s dogs today do not fulfill these specialized roles and instead live as semi-feral scavengers known as “village dogs.” The Adam Boyko Laboratory at Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine is focused on genomic investigation of dogs as a model of genetic disease and evolutionary genetics, to better understand how the forces of natural and artificial selection have shaped the domestic dog genome and the genetic architecture underlying the tremendous diversity we see in dogs today."

It's almost impossible not to stare at the dog who's known as Pig.

Born in Atlanta with severe deformities and adopted by Kim Dillenbeck who lives in Alabama, the eight-month-old mutt has gangly legs, a body that appears to have been chopped in half and no neck.

Pig looks like one of those fake animals created with Photoshop to draw clicks on websites, yet she's real.

"She's missing several inches, probably seven inches of spine, her joints, her hips and her joints, and everything, are way up here at the top, right at the base of what is her spine, and none of them are in the right position," said Dillenbeck.

The veterinarian who treats Pig said none of the vets who care for the dog have ever seen another animal with the same condition.

"The whole clinic loves her. She comes in and she's a rock star here," said Dr. Rachael Hudson-Breland.

Found as a puppy with three littermates in a wooded area, Pig is smaller than her surviving siblings at only 15 or so pounds.

Her spine is about seven inches shorter than normal and wavy, with many bones fused together.

Tens of thousands have watched internet videos of Pig online since her debut about a month ago.

And Pig sometimes loses her balance and topples over like a toddler.

Overall, though, Pig is in great shape... for the shape she is in.

His mother was 5.5 lbs and his father was 4 lbs. There were 2 others in his litter: a 4 pound female and a 6 lb male. We bought him from friends of ours so we know he's legitimate. He's also got AKC papers to boot. Hope you enjoy the pics. I'll try to post a vid when I can.

We hear many stories about dogs’ reactions to owners coming home after long or short periods. We have witnessed many adorable and joyous reactions. Dogs are very loyal, they can’t resist the distance between them and their owners. Even if the distance and time were long, the love of the dog to its owner stays the same and gets even stronger. This video simply shows how pets are loyal, faithful and loving creatures.
They remember their owners even after long separations. They still remember them after months and even years. Dogs teach us how to be faithful and truly loving. Nothing beats having a loyal pet.

Native Indian Breeds: of Dogs
A lot of good work has been done by many Indians, some of whom have spent their entire lifetime .on the documentation of the Indian breeds. But unfortunately for us all the standard for many Indian breeds has not found common consensus.
Only the more popular or rather the breeds that have more number of dogs have been studied, measured, and standards written for them. It is not the aim of this website to go into the details of the differing opinions or research the details of these standards. Though the site is called dogsindia.com because it is meant to be a database of info on all dogs and dog owners, breeders, vets and all members who provide dog related services in India, it is not just a site on Indian dogs alone. So we shall provide a summary of the info available with us on the individual native Indian dog breeds. If we are wrong please do write to us with your valuable suggestions. If you have detailed info or can help us find that info about some lesser known breeds such as the Kanni, the Manjil, and so on,The Indian Pariah Dog (also pye dog, pie dog, or pi dog) is the aboriginal landrace, or naturally selected "breed" of the Indian sub-continent. It is called also called the Indian Native Dog and is nowadays referred to as the INDog by experts and enthusiasts. The term "pariah dog" is not derogatory in the canine context and refers to a class of primitive dogs of a specific appearance known as the "long-term pariah morph."A long time ago, and thousands of years before the arrival of modern purebreeds, a race of dogs much like this one inhabited the Indian subcontinent. These were the very first domestic dogs and Man's earliest animal companions.
This ancient race is part of the dingo-pariah group of dogs, which exists across continents. Close relatives include the Australian Dingo, The Canaan Dog or Israel, the New Guinea Singing Dog and the African Basenji. The type can be described as a natural breed or 'landrace'.The result is a very hardy dog. Highly alert, intelligent and capable of independent thinking. in short, an animal perfectly adapted for survival in a free-roaming life. All Indian languages have a term for "native dog", clearly acknowledging the existence of an indigenous dog type. Remains and artefacts depicting dogs of this type were among the finds at some Indus Valley sites and even erlier sites including Nolithic ones.Dogs from around the subcontinent were sampled recently for Cornell University's Village Dog Genetic Diversity Project. The INDog Project was informed that the preliminary findings show Indian dogs, including INDogs, "are genetically highly distinct from dog populations in other countries sampled by the team".From the paper "The Indian Native Dog" by Gautam Das: The Indian Native Dog (INDog) is an ancient autochthonous (landrace) type of dog that is found all over India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and even beyond South Asia. It was featured on National Geographic Channel's film, 'Search for the First Dog' along with the other related ancient types such as the Canaan Dog of Israel and the Australian Dingo. This is the original breed of the country, found free-living as a commensal of man all over the Indian subcontinent. It is extremely alert, very social dog. It's rural evolution, often close to forests where predators like tigers and leopards were common, has made it an extremely cautious breed and this caution is not to be mistaken for a lack of courage. They make excellent watch dogs and are very territorial and defensive of their pack/family. They need good socializing as pups and do well wtih families and children. However, they are not comfortable around strangers and can get defensive. They are highly intelligent and easily trainable, but can get bored equally easily and not want to play typical, repetitive dog games like "fetch". Owners are frequently outsmarted by this expert of escape ! They are modest eaters and will rarely overeat. They are a very active breed and thrive with regular exercise and very long walks, several times a day. They bark at the slightest doubt or provocation and can hence be noisy.Being a naturally evolved and perfected breed, they have very few health concerns and thrive with minimal "maintenance", especially in tropical weather.
The skin needs very little grooming and the dogs themselves are relatively clean. They have no body odour. Genetic health ailments like hip dysplasia etc. are extremely rare since in a naturally evolved race only the fittest individuals breed and the flaws are bred out.

UPDATE APRIL 18: We lost The Little Prince (a.k.a. Purple) this morning due to Fading Kitten Syndrome, which encompasses a variety of issues that are not survivable. We did everything in our power to help him fight, but he was not destined to stay with us. Our hearts always break when we lose one, and we hope his short life will inspire you to be advocates for spaying and neutering.

UPDATE APRIL 17, 7:45pm: Ramona's milk has not fully come in yet, so I am supplementing the kittens (bottle feeding) until it (hopefully) does. The kitten with the purple collar is not as feisty as the others, but he did very well with the bottle so I am hoping he was just hungry.

UPDATE APRIL 17, 2:50pm: Ramona gave birth to five healthy kittens today, I believe we have four boys and one girl, but that might change... ;)

UPDATE APRIL 17 8:02am: Ramona is in ACTIVE LABOR!

Chloe, Rula and Ramona are pregnant ferals about to give birth for the last time. They come from a colony of more than 230 feral cats, where 90% have been spayed/neutered thanks to Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) efforts. Meet their colony: http://TinyKittens.com/happyforest

UPDATE APRIL 3, 2018: A third pregnant feral named Rula has joined our feral caternity ward. She is also from the Happy Forest. Rula is black with a subtle white locket, white belly spot and white hairs on her scruff.

UPDATE APRIL 2, 2018: Gwen "accidentally" trapped a pregnant feral cat, so we are going to see how she does sharing a room with Chloe. Chloe (ginger + white) and Ramona (pure black) are from the same colony, so it is likely they know each other. There are two nests in the room, and plenty of space for both of them.

Ramona is younger than Chloe, probably around 18 months old, and is likely due around the same time as Chloe. We will post updates as we find out more.

UPDATE March 24: Chloe is scheduled for an exam and radiographs on Wednesday to check for kittens, check her lungs (they sound a bit wheezy), and do bloodwork.

Chloe will be part of our new project to map the DNA of her feral cat colony. http://tinykittens.com/dna

Chloe is a feral cat who was trapped on March 23, 2018 because she appeared to be pregnant. Our intake exam revealed she is also in need of dental surgery. The plan is to observe and confirm she is pregnant, and see how receptive she is to socialization.

If she is pregnant, she will have her last litter of kittens in safety and then mom and kittens will all be spayed/neutered. If not pregnant, she will be spayed, have dental surgery and then we will determine if she is a candidate for socialization and adoption while she recovers.

Chloe comes from a colony that started with more than 230 feral cats. We have done Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) on 90% of this colony, and have socialized and adopted more than 100 cats and kittens. We provide daily feeding and care to the remaining cats as we continue to socialize and adopt out any willing cats. More at http://tinykittens.com/happyforest

📺 The Kennel Club - A 'parade of mutants'

The Kennel Club - A
In 2008, the BBC produced a controversial documentary on the harmful effects of pedigree dog shows.
